Choosing a venue

Mantapa, hotel or resort

Bangalore weddings happen in five kinds of building, and the kind decides more than the look: it sets the charging model, the kitchen rules and the guest count the space can honestly hold.

What the kind actually decides

A hotel sells you a running banquet operation: the plate rate carries the kitchen, the service staff, the back-of-house. A mantapa or convention hall sells you the building, and the wedding is assembled inside it — your caterer, your decorator, your generator if it comes to that. Resorts and farms sit in between, and the good ones in the Devanahalli belt have made the multi-day wedding their whole trade because the rooms are on the lawn.

Heritage properties are the small, stubborn category. There are 10 on our file, they photograph like nothing else in the city, and they come with the most rules — on sound, on timings, on what may be fixed to a hundred-year-old wall. Worth every negotiation, if the building means something to your family.

Is a kalyana mantapa cheaper than a hotel wedding in Bangalore?

Often, but not automatically. A mantapa or convention hall prices the space and leaves catering to your own contractor, so a large guest list at a modest per-leaf rate can undercut any hotel. A hotel prices the plate and includes the banquet operation. The crossover point depends on your guest count: the bigger the list, the harder the per-plate model is to beat on flexibility, and the better the rental model looks on paper.

Which Bangalore venues take 1,000 guests or more?

70 venues on our file are recorded at 1,000-guest capacity or above, spread across convention venues, resort lawns and garden properties rather than concentrated in hotels. City-core five-star ballrooms mostly sit below that line; the four-digit lawns are in the north, the south and along Mysore Road.

Can we hold the muhurtham and the reception at different kinds of venue?

Yes, and in Bangalore it is common: a morning muhurtham at a mantapa or temple-adjacent hall, then a reception at a hotel or resort. It doubles the logistics — two decor plans, two catering arrangements, a guest-movement plan between them — which is exactly the kind of wedding a planning team earns its keep on.
